Here is an uncomfortable truth: the youngest girls who participated in this film will be almost ready to retire by the time men and women in Australia are paid the same amount. The rate of change towards gender parity is agonisingly slow for girls growing up in Australia and around the world. We know that at the heart of this issue is lack of visibility about the experiences of girls.
It’s time we really listened to what girls have to say about this. That’s why Plan International Australia interviewed 18 Australian girls aged 10 to 17 years old to gain rare insight into how this group experiences their world. Partnering with Wellcom Worldwide, we produced the film Listen for International Day of the Girl. We wanted to know where they feel inequality most profoundly. And about their aspirations and hopes for the future and those things that are getting in the way of them living a rich and fulfilling life.
